In this project we had to choose a sport and explain the physics of a single action in that sport. We chose the sport archery for this because archery was fun and had materials we could actually access. The sport had to include a projectile of some form and an impact. Archery happens to fit both of these parameters so we selected this sport.
Concepts
In this project, there were some new physics concepts that we learned. Here are the major concepts.
momentum: The tendency of objects to keep moving. Momentum= Impulse. We used momentum to calculate impact force when combined with impulse. Equation: p=mv
impulse: How long and how forcefully something is impacted. Momentum= Impulse. We used impulse to calculate impact force. Equation: J=Ft
vectors: When an object moves, it normally moves in two directions due to gravity. This causes the velocity of the projectile to be the square root of one side squared+ the other side squared on the right triangle. This creates velocity vectors. We used velocity vectors to find the actual velocity of the arrow.
Not all concepts we used were from physics/engineering. We used the concept of archery in this project as well which is the concept of shooting a pointy stick with feathers into a soft object some distance away.
Reflection
This project ended up going well overall. I was able to organize my group well. I did this by scripting the video and directing the filming. I also learned I have a decent ability for scripting. I found this when I scripted most of the video.
This video project did end up going very well but there were still some down sides. I could've let my group mates contribute more. If any of them got distracted, I would just keep pushing ahead without them. I will try to improve this by getting every member involved in every step. I also need to be less controlling. During the project, I would normally stick to my idea/point of view unless a significantly better idea was shown during filming. I will continue to improve this by considering all ideas equally before deciding on a course of action.
