For this project, we had to choose a world problem, research the problem, and come up with a solution or partial solution for that problem. The problem we selected was overpopulation, focusing on the food aspect. The solution our group came up with was vertical farms to increase food production for the same amount of space.
Concepts
The concept we focused on for this project was the engineering design cycle: 1. ask a question, 2. generate ideas, 3. select a solution, 4. plan the solution, 5. test the plan, 6. redesign, and 7. share. We used the 1st step to decide which world problem we would attempt to come up with a solution for. We used the 2nd step to brainstorm ideas. The 3rd step was used to pick the solution we ended up developing. The 4th step was used to research the specifics of vertical farms and aeroponics. The 5th step would be used to make a model or small section of what the plan was to make, but our group was unable to perform any physical tests. The 6th step allowed us to switch from hydroponics to aeroponics for greater efficiency. For the 7th step, we put together a slideshow which will shown below.
We also learned about concepts of human overpopulation, its causes, and the repercussions that could entail if it gets too out of hand. We also learned about some potential strategies to slow overpopulation such as education or increasing efficiency of various resources.
Reflection
This project went overall well. I was able to work together very well with this group. There was next to no disharmony throughout the duration of the project. I also gained the skill of determining what website were reliable. A great majority of this project was research so finding reliable websites was of great importance.
Though this project went very well, not all went well completely harmoniously. First, I could work on my empathy. When someone stopped working, I would sometimes get very irritated. I will try to improve this by trying to be more positive during projects. I could of also been more focused on research. When researching, I would sometimes lose focus, decreasing efficiency. I will try to improve this by attempting not to get distracted as often.
